Mr. Ernő Rubik taught design to college students in Hungary. He made a cube in 1974. It had 27 wooden blocks. He wanted students to think about how shapes work together. He also wanted them to figure out a complex puzzle. A plastic “Magic Cube” went on display at a toy fair in 1979. The Guinness Book of World Records held the first speed cubing contest in March of 1981. Now there are many contests each year.
