She served in the army.
Mrs. Tubman helped slaves get to freedom. She also helped in a war. She was a spy. She was a nurse. People now call her General Tubman.
She lived her life to serve others.

Harriet Tubman is now a general in Maryland’s National Guard. She was the first woman to be in charge of a U.S. military action during war. She was a scout, spy, and nurse in the Union Army. She guided 150 black soldiers on a raid in the Civil War. Mrs. Tubman fled slavery in 1849. Then she helped with the Underground Railroad. It was a secret route of safe houses. She taught slaves how to follow the route to freedom.
